 Singing with Sylvia for Christmas

YXE Street Food Festival

YXE Street Food Festival

I had been hearing a lot of buzz about food trucks in Saskatoon, and had recently started drooling over many of them through their Twitter feeds. So, when I realized I was getting the 2015 Ford Focus during the YXE Street Food & Music Festival weekend, I knew that had to be one of our first stops!

About 25 mobile food vendors lined Spadina between 2nd and 3rd avenues overlooking River Landing on Saturday. It was perfect weather for this first-of-its-kind event in Saskatoon, and it was packed!

This is not your average street meat, ya'll. Each truck has its own personality and unexpected twists on familiar favourites.

Take Disco Dogs, for example. This was Saskatoon's very first food truck. Their claim to local fame is gourmet hot dogs on stone-baked naan bread.

My son's pick of the day was Scout's Mex Hall's chicken nachos. Their homemade cheese sauce and salsa was super tasty. I should have gotten my own order because someone did not want to share. Rude.

A truck I had been wanting to try, was Thrive Juice Company. Each bottle is packed with a day's requirement of fruits and vegetables. I chose a bottle of Sweet Envy which contains kale, spinach, apple, pineapple, parsley and lime. It was absolutely delicious and the kids thought so, too.  At $10 a bottle, it felt like a bit of a splurge. But, I have been putting my own smoothies-to-go in the the lovely reusable glass bottle.

My girlie first picked out a gourmet grilled cheese from the Dapper Dane food truck. Unfortunately, once we made it through the line and up to the window we were told the wait was one hour! {Told you it was packed!}

So, her second choice was Berry Bliss waffles from the Yumm Truck. I am glad I sneaked the first bite, because she, too, was not interested in passing it around. {Their mom really needs to do a better job teaching these kids to share.}

The music was good and the food was great, but the hands-down best part of the YXE Street Food & Music Festival was its location on Saskatoon's gorgeous River Landing.

You just cannot beat this location. It is such a wonderful place to hang out on a beautiful afternoon like this.

Alas, the YXE Street Food & Music Festival only comes once a year, but you can still track down the Saskatoon food trucks, or book one for upcoming events, at yxestreetfood.com.

And, now we're off to explore more of what our beautiful city has to offer during our "Ford Focus on My City" adventure! Stay tuned.

  1. This place is fast, clean, and full of flavor. I walked by this place is nearest on my way to work but finally made it into the place. Their menu only has a handful of items but that is what makes them good--they can focus on core dishes http://www.breakfastnearmenow.com/locations/breakfast-places-near-me/
