great cloth diaper change 2011
In conjunction with Earth Day, local parents will join families across the globe to set a Guinness World Record™ for the most cloth diapers ever changed simultaneously on Saturday, April 23. The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2011 will take place in over 400 locations worldwide, including Saskatoon.

Baby Luv Boutique is hosting a local event in the auditorium of the Cliff Wright Branch Library in the Lakewood Civic Centre, 1635 McKercher Drive in Saskatoon. The event will begin at 10 a.m., and is geared not only to current cloth diaper users but to non-cloth diapering families as well. For those who do not have their own, cloth diapers are being supplied for the change by a local area diaper service.

Numerous sponsors will provide door prizes for participants. Baby Luv Boutique will also be hosting one of its popular cloth diaper workshops free of charge on this day in celebration of the event and of Earth Day.

Baby Luv Boutique and owner Shari Hinz have been promoting the use of cloth diapers since the online boutique opened in April 2007.

“We’ve been hosting cloth diaper workshops in Humboldt and Saskatoon since June 2008 and the number of families looking at choosing cloth diapers for their children is steadily growing,” says Hinz. "The Great Cloth Diaper Change is not only an opportunity to set a Guinness World Record but to raise awareness about cloth diapers as a healthy, sustainable option for parents to consider using for their families."

According to Heather McNamara, of the Real Diaper Association, billions of disposable diapers are sent to landfills every year where it will take hundreds of years for them to decompose.

“Our local volunteers are finding growing numbers of parents coming to find out about cloth diapers, whether it be for environmental, financial, or health reasons - - or even because these diapers are just plain cute,” said McNamara. "It is the hope of the organizers that this event will be an eye opener and an inspiration for expecting and new parents to use cloth diapers, a more planet-friendly alternative that also saves parents substantial money.
