 Singing with Sylvia for Christmas

Baby Loss Awareness

Baby Loss Awareness

Our children can make imprints on our hearts almost from the moment they are conceived. These imprints last a lifetime . . . even when a lifetime is cut short.
When our second child, Ava Faith, inexplicably passed in utero at full term, my heart transformedAlthough she never took a breath, Ava forever changed my heart and the ripples of her life are many. As we had inscribed on her headstone with her precious footprints, "There is no foot too small that it cannot make an impact on this world."

Her footprints that were stamped for us at the hospital are among my most prized possessions. They were so precious to me that I wouldn't leave home without them until we purchased a fire-proof safe in which to store them.

Now I carry Ava's prints with me when I'm wearing my charm bracelet made by Lisa Steinkey of Smallprint. Lisa was able to use Ava's very footprints to make an impression in heart-shaped silver. The back of the charm features Ava's name and delivery date. My Smallprint charm bracelet also includes prints from my other children. What a treasure to be able to carry the prints of all my kids wherever I go.

October is Pregnancy, Infant and Child Loss Awareness Month and October 15 is Baby Loss Awareness Day, a time of awareness and support for parents who have experienced the death of a child. Grieving parents remember their children every day. However, I have found that special moments, as well as special mementos, can provide welcome opportunities for feeling and healing.

On October 5, 2019, Empty Arms Perinatal Loss Support Services, Inc., is hosting its No Foot Too Small Awareness Walk to raise awareness for baby loss, while honouring all of our little ones gone too soon. Whether you have personally experienced the death of your baby, or want to show your support to a loved one who has, you are invited for a stroll around Kinsmen Park on this day.

If you, or someone you hold dear, know the pain of having a child gone too soon, I am sorry. May you find your own moments and momentos that are meaningful to you and that bring peace and comfort as you carry that special soul forever in your heart.

  1. Thank you for this beautiful reflection Laura, and for the large gift of items you recently brought for our Moms and babies at the Pregnancy Options Centre. We appreciate your generosity so much. I hope to meet you the next time you come in .
