 Singing with Sylvia for Christmas

la leche league gatherings

A supportive bra and La Leche League are the best friends “the girls” could ever have.

Whether you are a nursing mom seeking additional support or an expectant mother wanting to know more about breastfeeding, a La Leche League meeting is a great resource.

I walked into my first La Leche meeting when I was eight months pregnant with my first child. Tucked under my arm was a full page of questions that I frantically had jotted down in my “freak-out notebook” at 3 a.m. that morning. (Note: my “freak-out notebook” was supposed to be a beautiful journal of thoughts kept during pregnancy, but looking back it was a big fat list of what-ifs, to-dos and am-I-ready-for-this freak-outs penned at all hours of the night when I couldn’t sleep.)

The ladies at the meeting -- most of them experienced breastfeeding mothers -- graciously answered each of my freak-out questions one by one. I will never forget one lady who kindly got down in the floor with her baby to share a helpful horizontal nursing position with someone who was experiencing back issues. I came away feeling more empowered and confident knowing I had ready access to a support network when I had more questions or concerns along the way.

All women interested in breastfeeding are welcome to attend La Leche League meetings, as are their babies. Older children are welcome to attend if they are happier with mom. Fathers are welcome to attend a few select meetings. Most meetings last about two hours.

Regular evening meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Holy Covenant Church, 1426 Alexandra Avenue, on the corner of Balmoral Street.

Regular daytime meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday afternoon of each month at 12:30 p.m., at 417 Avenue C South, near the Farmers Market. Plan to pay for parking.

On the first Wednesday of each month, the La Leche League Toddler Group meets. This group is geared more toward mothers nursing older children. The group meets at different times of the day, usually at the Augustana Lutheran Church on the corner of Broadway Avenue and 7th. (Use 7th Street entrance.)  Contact La Leche, 655-4805, to be put on the Toddler e-mail notification list.

E-mail or call 655-4805 for additional meeting information or if you have questions and wish to speak to a La Leche League Leader. Additional information on breastfeeding is available at LLLC.ca. You can also find La Leche League Saskatoon on Facebook.
